Waiting For You to Arrive: Trying to Let Go

I am sitting awake at 3:00 am, praying for Hannah as she would be navigating her way across two different Tokyo airports over the next few hours. I am waiting to hear, at some point this morning, that she has reached her host family. While waiting, I listen to a Michael Franti song over and over. I first heard this song at 10,000 Lakes Festival in the summer of 08. At that time, Hannah’s exchange year was only a small glimpse in our mind but this song already made me cry, even then. Michael Franti wrote this song on the morning his son left for NYC to pursue life as a graffiti artist. At 10,000 Lakes Festival, Franti told the audience that this was a song about letting go and that it was okay to let go.

The funny thing about letting go, I am realizing, is that there is no other moment when you know so clearly and intimately how much you love another person. I love you so Hannah!

I’ve Got Love For You

Another morning has come and the sun is high
But I know that today is the day that I might cry
Because I know you’re going
And I know you’re leaving
To somewhere you hope to find the peace of mind you’re seeking

In the back of a greyhound it’ll take you far
In the back of a greyhound bus you can be who you are

And I say
La-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La La
I got love for you
I got love for you

So I’ll be waiting my dear u-huh
Waiting right here u-huh
Waiting my dear u-huh
Waiting right here u-huh

I remember the time back when we was home
In and out up and down in this life what a crazy road
It’s been a long time that I should’a said what I tell now
That I got faith in you
And I’ve got hope for you

In the dark of the night in the hotel when you’re alone
In the middle of the city where nobody cares to know
On the top of the town in the glimmer of the shining lights
You just shine on now
You just shine on now

And I say
La-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La La
I got love for you
I got love for you

So I’ll be waiting my dear u-huh
Waiting right here u-huh
Waiting right here u-huh

And I’ve got love for you – love for you – love for you

And I know that you can’t say for sure when you’re coming home
But I got faith in you
And I believe in you

And I say
La-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La La
I got love for you
I got love for you

And I’ll be waiting right here

Michael Franti
