5 Books to Accompany You on a Personal Retreat

  1. Coelho, Paulo, The Alchemist.
  2. Frankl, Viktor E., Man’s Search for Meaning.
  3. L’Engle, Madeleine, A Circle of Quiet.
  4. Lindbergh, Anne Morrow, Gift From the Sea.
  5. Palmer, Parker J., Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation.

I just read Parker Palmer’s book on vocation during my last retreat. It was on the book shelf in the tiny cottage in which I stay during my retreats. I thought it was fantastic and fully intend to buy a copy. I like to buy my books used, preferably at the Goodwill, so it might be some time before I come across this book. Speaking of used books and the Goodwill. Whenever I go to the Goodwill, I look for copies of Lindbergh’s Gift From The Sea–I like to buy copies with inscriptions. I began collecting these books after I found the below inscription inside a very old copy of the book:

I think that is just about the most beautiful inscription ever. I love to think about the relationship between Jim and Delores. Anyway, I am collecting these books (a strange collection, I know) so if you ever find an inscription in a used Gift From the Sea, please take a photo of the inscription and attach it to the comment section of this post. I’d greatly appreciate it! Or, even if you have any other wonderful inscriptions–that would be fun to see too!
